Teen Drivers: What can Parents Do?

For many parents who have reached the point in their teen’s life to get their drivers license, the time can be exciting, yet very worrisome.  Some parents may believe that once their teen gets permission to drive that their safety is out of their control, yet the truth is parents play a huge roll in their teen’s driving habits on the road. Follow these tips and you will have done your job as a parent to help your teen stay safe while driving:

- Keep lines of communication open: Don’t just talk to your teen, listen to what they have to say as well. Make sure you know where they are going, who will be in their car, and when they will be returning.

- Set Clear rules beforehand: It is important to set specific rules for your teen in regards to driving. It is just important to adhere strictly to these rules. Sit down with your teen, and don’t just give the the rules, explain why you have these rules. It is also very important that if they have friends in the vehicle, that they know the rules as well.

- Set a Good Example: Be a perfect example to your teen on what to do when driving. Where your seat belt, don’t text and drive, keep your cool in tense driving situations, and keep your speed within reason.
